COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM

REPLAY (Read to Educate & PLAY), a Functional Literacy Program

Rhea B. Penaflor

Former education undersecretary Juan Miguel Luz in his article on PCIJ wrote, “Based on a population of 80 million, 6.6 percent illiteracy translates into 5.3 million Filipinos who cannot read or write; a number that grew by about 1.6 million over the past decade.”

Now, the Philippines is roughly a hundred million people. The Philippines being a nation of non-readers is predicted to worsen if not addressed now. This spells prolonged poverty to the already impoverished children in far-flung areas.

This project aims to encourage reading as education is the best equalizer between the rich and the poor. This project aims to boost the academic performance of the children. REPLAY is not only a reading program; the stories that will be read to them were written and customized for Filipino children by LX founding President Rhea Penaflor. Likewise, REPLAY is a program where kids will have fun. All in all, it will be a fun learning.

Why REPLAY? REPLAY as in “AS YOU WERE.” THERE’S A NEED TO BALANCE BETWEEN READING AND PLAYING.
